Trying new wild foods

When trying new wild plants it is advisable to go slowly. The following steps will help you identify if your body is intolerant to any new foods. Although we have never had any issue ourselves or with any of the participants we have introduced to new wild foods. This guide is the approach we adopt and is in not a substitute for common sense. If you already suffer from food allergies, are pregnant or are taking medication then extra caution should be taken. The following steps are only to be attempted after positive confirmation that a plant is in fact edible.

Stage 1. Chew a small piece of plant for 10 seconds and discard. Wait 1 hour. If no adverse reaction occurs proceed to stage 2.

Stage 2. Chew a small piece of plant and swallow. Wait 1 hour. if no adverse reaction occurs proceed to stage 3.

Stage 3.  Prepare a meal with a small quantity of the plant in question. Wait 4 hours. If no adverse reaction occurs then you can continue to use the plant as an ingredient.
